Mathematics @ Atheneum School

Mathematics

Euclid alone has looked on Beauty bare. Fortunate they Who, though once only and then but far away.  Have heard her massive sandal set on stone. Edna St. Vincent Millay (1923) At Atheneum, mathematics is practiced as a precise form of reasoning that aims at discovering the truth about the world and oneself. It enables the student not only to think more clearly and logically about any subject, but it also guides the student in exploring many of the fundamental structures and relations in the world. Students begin to see that mathematical proficiency and computational skill have unlimited applications in their lives. Our curriculum traces the historical breakthroughs in mathematics to provide a foundation for inventive problem solving and theorizing. The Math program at Atheneum comprises three main classes: the Math Seminar, Tutorials in Pre-algebra to Calculus and Advanced Mathematical Systems, and self-paced computational exercises. Students are grouped in Math Seminars and Algebra classes by prior knowledge. Math exercises range from basic arithmetic to advanced algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
