Come Teach In Alaska!
Atheneum Internship and Training Program
The vision of the Internship Program is to provide teacher training and experience with our unique program at Atheneum for certification for future teaching positions here in Anchorage or in other areas where Atheneum Schools plan to operate.
Benefits for participants include: learning teaching methodologies from Eastern and Western approaches; learning the Great Learning daily practice for physical and mental integration, health, and strengthening; learning by experience in the classroom with different teachers all aspects of leading, dynamics with sixth through twelfth graders, evaluation, and curriculum development; learning all aspects of the program without the pressures or responsibilities of a full time teaching position; optional participation in the overall development of the school and future schools; experiencing the natural grandeur of Alaska; housing in a spectacular setting above the city; participating in a team of faculty members who have a lifestyle of learning and studying in a dialogue that includes classic texts from around the world.
Benefits to the school include: forming a team of trained people to hold future teaching positions, better teachers because of preparatory training, more teachers in the school for the benefit of the students, team teaching opportunities, and opening possibilities for potential positions in the school other than teaching, e.g. marketing, business, office, etc…
The Internship Program includes participation in all Atheneum classes with current faculty, extra classes in the Great Learning Program, and some Faculty meetings. Intensives (two weeks per semester) and all-school trips are optional. Interns will have the same school vacations and short breaks as the whole school. Atheneum will provide housing, vehicle use, and a stipend to cover basic living expenses. The idea is that no other job would be necessary for interns.
Opportunity of a Lifetime! Travel to remote Alaskan villages!
The Atheneum Internship program has begun to offer a new opportunity for teaching music and art in rural Alaska. In 2008-9 school year we will send intern teachers out for two week periods, then they return to work with us at Atheneum. Interns will earn extra wages in addition to the Stipend for this work, and all expenses are paid. It is a very exciting opportunity to visit remote, small communities with rich cultural traditions in the wildest areas of Alaska, even through the winter! Our teachers generally stay in the schools and can participate in all aspects of village life.
Earn your Master’s Degree!
The Atheneum Internship Program also offers a new opportunity to get a Masters Degree in Education through Alaska Pacific University by teaching with us at Atheneum School. The cost of this Masters Degree will be greatly reduced by this special arrangement. Please ask us about this exciting new development!
